The Drive-Thru Test: A New Measure of Unconditional Kindness

You’ve probably heard of the grocery cart test—the viral social media phenomenon that sparked heated debates about character and responsibility. The premise is simple: putting away your grocery cart is seen as the ultimate litmus test for kindness. But let’s be honest—life isn’t always that straightforward.

So, I’m here to introduce a new challenge. A real-world scenario that takes kindness to the next level: The Drive-Thru Test.

What Is the Drive-Thru Test?

Picture this: You’re parked near a busy drive-thru. The only way out is to back up, but the line is long, and someone’s car is blocking your escape route. The question is:

What happens next?

  • Do they notice you trying to leave and back up to make room?

  • Do they sit there, blissfully unaware of your situation?

  • Or worse, do they refuse to budge, thinking, “I need my coffee, and that’s not my problem”?

This moment is more than just a minor inconvenience. It’s a snapshot of someone’s true nature—a test of unconditional kindness.

Breaking Down the Drive-Thru Test

  • The First Person: They see the situation and act without hesitation, backing up to make room for you. This is kindness in action—simple, selfless, and impactful.

  • The Second Person: Maybe they miss the cue at first, but once they notice, they correct the mistake. They’re not perfect, but hey, they make it right in the end.

  • The Third Person: They stay put, whether due to distraction, indifference, or outright refusal. Maybe their kindness tank is running a little low today.

Why It Matters

We all have moments when life feels overwhelming—busy schedules, tight deadlines, or just a bad day. But the Drive-Thru Test is about more than convenience or responsibility. It’s about choice:

  • Do you notice others around you?

  • Do you take small actions to make someone’s day a little easier?

Kindness isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a step back—literally and figuratively.

Passing the Drive-Thru Test

So, what do your actions say about you? Do you pass the Drive-Thru Test?

Here’s the thing: kindness is a skill we can all work on. It’s a muscle we can strengthen with practice, one small act at a time. Because when we notice, pause, and act with empathy, we create ripple effects of positivity.

Your Challenge

Next time you’re in a drive-thru—or any situation where you can choose to make someone’s day easier—ask yourself: Am I acting with unconditional kindness?

Let’s raise our kindness game together, one drive-thru test at a time.
